One Jail.  One Recording Studio.- 16 Bars

Picture
16 BARS is a feature length music documentary that offers a rare glimpse at the human stories — and songs — that are locked away in our nation’s jails and prisons. The film follows a unique rehabilitation effort in the Richmond City Justice Center that invites inmates to write and record original music. In the jail’s makeshift recording studio, 4 men collaborate on an album with a Grammy-winning recording artist, Todd “Speech” Thomas, from the iconic activist hip-hop group Arrested Development. As the creative process unfurls, each of these men must unearth painful memories from the past, which hold a key to a new chapter in their lives.
"THESE MEN ARE BEHIND BARS... BUT THEIR VOICES HAVE TO BE HEARD."
- SPEECH (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT)
The film is set in Richmond Virginia, the former seat of the confederacy, where the legacy of systemic racism, a spiraling opioid crisis, generational poverty, and a lack of mental health services have entrapped many of its citizens in a cycle of incarceration, making the city itself a unique case study for rising recidivism rates in the U.S. at large. With the U.S. locking up more of its citizens per capita than any other nation on the planet, the music of the film serves as rare testimony to the raw and messy truth behind the criminal justice system’s revolving door.

U2 by Arrested Development

Since starting When We Speak, in 2008, I have been fortunate to speak with many great musicians, singers, and actors. Each one has taught me many things about this industry that has help me along my career. I once heard Oprah say that you learn much about a person when you sit down with them....and I totally agree with her statement. I really enjoy the face to face interviews more than phone or email because it allows you to see directly into the guests' eyes and see their passion, their truths, their emotions, and even their insecurities. It's just an amazing experience! I recently sat down with Speech of Arrested Development. Yeah that's right...Arrested Development...the 2x Grammy Award winning hip hop group! When I spoke with Speech, I could see some of the very things that I saw in many other peoples' eyes....passion, determination, etc....but one thing I specifically noticed was "purpose" in his eyes. From the days of old, the group Arrested Development's music has always had purpose...and that purpose continues today in their songs like Greener, Trauma, Up, and U2. So take a moment to check out some of Arrested Development's new music.......like this one called "U2"......WHAT DO YOU SPEAK?
